supported by tornado wallace (delusions of grandeur), pete herbert (reverso 68/dance disorder)... when jay shepheard launched retrofit in early 2010, deep house with a splash of disco was on the menu. six releases later and the quality of music hasnt faltered once. jays own work has always been the main focus on all five releases but for retrofit 6, rudys midnight machine, (who is in fact robin lee of faze action) takes to the stage alongside an appearance from shepheard (as ee_ef_ex) on remixing duties. >ecstatic love glow< kicks off the ep, diving head first into the disco and synth heavy realm that we expect from retrofit (and, for that matter, from mr lee), whose house outputs with faze action as far back as 97 speak for themselves. the intro of tip tapping hats and congas leads into a penetrating bass guitar, a riff that goes on to be cleverly mirrored by keyboards and later, by what sounds like a scratchy lakland guitar. wooden hats, sirens and a plethora of cosmic elements boogie their way around until the tracks dominant synth parades in and takes over the arrangement, striking a dramatic and smug pose at the close of each stab. the second track of >east side good living< sticks with its predecessors groove, cosmic sirens, electronic whistles and metallic drum taps yet again highlighting rudys modern disco sound

ann aimee goes darker and more minimalistic than before with this debut release by area forty_one. this unknown producer gives us his personal interpretation of modern techno. this double pack contains five solid techno cuts, filled with spacy and robotic sounds, together with one imminent ambient track. discharging clouds gives us tracks, each one containing its unique vibe, and will please anyone with a preference for the dark, sinister techno sound. the mysterious area forty_one is one to keep an eye on

the word genius is not a term we like to use loosely when speaking about our artists but giorgio sancristoforo aka tobor experiment fits the bill. a gifted musician, soft synth designer, found sound pioneer and he still finds time to make forward thinking disco pop for bearfunk as tobor experiment >disco experience<.
after a well received ep in 2008 we sent giorgio back to the studio with the remit to make an lp so special that it could open new doors for us. well he certainly delivered! opening with the sweet modern disco sounds of >postcards from a nervous breakdown< we then get the first taste of giorgios song writing prowess with >breathe< a rather intense little number.

aah, how we have missed them! the fine young gentlemen that are channel x, two of stil vor talents most active producers of meticulously crafted and deeply energetic tech-house smash hits. and just in time for the open-air season they now come back with two very convincing pieces of dancefloor art. first up is >little symphony<, an epic space opera that takes it cues from early 90s techno and mixes it up with post-modern grooves and beats. the wide and open spaces are filled with some very hymnal string patterns that are given a final treatment with a reverbed and high-pitched vocal sample. contrast that with the rather jittery beat and a subbass as deep as the frequencies will go and you got yourself a substantially clear bit of techno that is best imagined when it is dark and only some beams of air tell you where you are. channel x do not produce, they direct and all of the sounds are their actors! on the flip things get more light-hearted and set for the daylight hours as well. >steamboat willie< is a heavily sample-orientated swinging piece of jack. the rhythm guitar lead the way on top of a clap-based loop that sets the basis for some very jazzy interpretations along the way. clarinets, trumpets, percussions, brass, effects and even some talking vocal samples are all allowed to join in this hedonistic big band that is at play. this is one for the sunshine, this is one for the smiles on the faces, this is one to feel instantly good about yourself and everything around you. two very different tracks on this ep, but both equally stand out for themselves

here comes the eighth release in the line, pressure cooked by christian wunsch. three slices of fine modern techno, but with strong roots on tradition. buried mistakes opens fire with clean drum programming and punchy beats. spacey arpeggios and subtle drones are the makings of this movie. on the flip side, complete surrender uses similar rhythm coordinates, clean percussion sounds programmed with extreme taste, constantly evolving until the strings come in, creating a sci-fi futuristic mood, perfect for techno travellers. inevitable war is the last piece slower tempo, intelligent drone work out, dark atmospheres lying on a single kick, growing to make a complex beat as the minutes go on. they call it deep techno out there. a departure from the hard edged sounds on behalf of a mental way of understanding techno.

remerc is no new face to the scene. he has been active for quite some time in the german techno scene and has recently remixed butchs track >muskatnuss< on the trapez ltd 100 anniversary compilation. he had his breakthrough in 2010 with the track >tiny calf< which ended up on the cocoon compilation >party animals< mixed by marco carola and nick curly. remerc opens his release with >ruhewolf<, a restless funkedelic rocker with a beat that juggles elements in a loose and totally cool way. the track is spiced up with elements of surreal bliss and could go on forever were there not the limitations of the vinyl. on the flipside we find an hanne & lore remix that tightens and fattens up the beat and pimps up the basslines. adding some twisted sounds ... making it a clubber par excellence. >just a bards tale< is a unique remerc track and stands out from all the productions he has done so far. here new wave coloured edgy vocals meet a post-detroit string-chord arrangement. sounds adventurous and daring? well it is to some degree... but recall >no more words< by carl craig from 1991 but executed in a dead modern way.

since decadence in june 2010 and seven eps released this year, dame music is a continuous story of success and has established itself in the underground music scene. the triumph of bloody marys >arabesque< ep on national radios was a turning point for the label which has defined its musical identity, a modern genre of electronic music blended with a touch of rock, disco, classic or new wave influences. last hits sierra sams >queen of spade< ep and komatons >dehunt< ep are an excellent representation of the dame-music signature. the artwork of the label has also seen a significant evolution by the quality of its covers and teasers which fully fits with the music. to celebrate its first anniversary and give a first overview of the label imprint, dame-music is proud to present potluck, a special compilation of unreleased tracks, produced by five duos (one of the dame-musics artists, plus one of their friend). bloody mary got this concept to gather the dame-music family (mostly consisted by marys berlin based artists and friends) to work hand in hand with the music and artwork. they shared talent, creativity, emotions and ideas.

>dysfunction<, hannulelauris first ep on i m a cliche goes beyond the dreamy, cosmic atmosphere of their previous releases and remixes on other eurodisco labels. the duos new sound still sends us floating but with an edgier, more toxic ride. hannu and lauri aka hannulelauri created a track for i m a cliche, a remix of botoxs hit >blue steel<. this track inspired the label to make more room for the finnish duo and bring their new music into its discography.
these two have been active figures in helsinkis club scene for quite a while, producing music together since 2006. when they crossed the borders of finland, the name of the band was pretty hard to retain but it didnt take long for all the bigwigs of modern disco to memorize it. two originals and a selection of remixes: >dysfunction< steps into the territory of deep melodic house with a classic resonance >box of box< throws around some fun rough beats toby tobias remix of dysfunction is iced with elegance and soulfulness. populettes remix of >box of box< is the new best friend of house dancers.

>positivenoise< is collaboration between system 7 and british house music legend a guy called gerald who now lives in berlin, and is one of two tracks on the new system 7 >up< album that they worked on together. the original club mixs exuberant sounds and crisp beats exude an infectious feel-good quality and a bright tech confidence inspired by berlins leaner sounds - already gaining plaudits and plays for its modern club sound. the carl craig remix strips down the original, and twists and turns for the dancefloor with dubby deep techno in carls own legendary style. a.mochis remix is a darker interpretation, with a long dropdown featuring shimmering s7 trademark sounds and a breakbeat build-up.

jin choi is a musician, producer, dj and live artist based in berlin, germany. equally focused on groove and melodic structures, his music fuses electronic and naturalistic sounds to move the head and body. once coined modern minimal, chois productions are equal parts emotion, melody and rhythm. full range is his first release on serialism records. in a recent interview, choi described himself as a burial loving music-nerd who is simply trying to create his own musical language. he has released on lessizmore, contexterrior, romanphoto & archipel, to name a few. for ser10, he joins forces with maceo plex (aka maetrik, the moniker he saves for his darker techno productions) to do just that. most known for his recent revered deep-house single, vibe your love on crosstown, plex makes the release the perfect late-night tool. first up is full range, a dubby tech-house number with ominous and increasingly glitchy repetitive vocals that remind the listener of what choi seems to already know - music is the universal language, music is no longer irrelevant. next, half baked, the eps star, manages to perfectly fuse industrial sounds with melody making a blissed-out, deep- house track. mysterious squeaks, hisses and factorial inner workings provide the backdrop while warm time-stretched freestyle vocals guide us through the production. maceos deep remix is around 9-minutes of chicago house inspired sounds layered with snappy high hats and emotive chords.

returning for a fourth ep on the label, berlins nick höppner continues his exploration into an ever-developing and rich production vocabulary. the rough goes with the smooth in perfect harmony on -a peck and pawn-. höppners unique sound design leads to a dense wash of sound sparkling with airy details and his characteristic sub bass subtleties, as the whole track gels together in a pushing modern house triumph. the spaced out and traveling -she parked herself- is a real fusion of the many influences behind the producers inspiration. bubbling percussion and pretty melodic structures fuse with a melting analog bassline in this high-tech and positive jam. with its heavy bass and late-night atmospheres -swivel flick- slows the pace in a warm, dubbed and droning thinkpiece that is just as cinematic as it is direct for the club. jostling just beneath the surface youll find a wealth of details that really shows off nicks talent and dedication to a non-standard groove

sebastian russell is one of the most exciting discoveries on mos ferrys decent 10inch label fenou. after his first single release >away< from 2009 the london producer chipped in a remix for dapayks >decade one< album and he also contributed the fantastic piece >follow the lost soul< for the >fenou bouquet vol. 1< label compilation in late 2010. now, he returns with the beautiful 2-track record >far around us< showing his eccentric as well as catchy interpretation of modern house music. the release is extended by three more tracks in the digital bundle including a hypnotizing remix of the title track by alex tomb. as usual, the 10inch record is a limited edition and numbered by hand.

the ep opens with >hypnotic bass<, a track with a very groovy gnaoua rythm. the sound of the guembri gives the production a very warm sensation. next up is >deep medina<, the title track. a real journey, the vocals are strong while sidi mohammeds lute elicits shivers. the melody manages to sound traditional while modern at the same time. >for hou!!!<, the closing track, philip bader perfectly works the acoustic samples, resulting in a characteristically berlin minimal sound. the kick and the bass are very heavy.

bermuda is a rare project from kimmo oksanen and roberto rodriguez. fusing synthed out deep house and disco vibes the talented pair have crafted a real blast from the past with the super cool retro styled ihasama. the release comes in three fantastic versions. firstly the thrilling nacho marco remix fuses 80s vibes with a modern approach as he twists the originals synths into an old school jacking house jam! the extended club music edit sees oksanen and rodriguez open up the energy levels with a more discofied, running mix. subtle key changes and some genius instrumentation really bring this mix to life, as its rousing synthlines do the business. finally up and coming uk producer jay shepheard reinterprets ihasama into a funky, light hearted jam thats perfect for the summer sun. soft strings rise and fall before a walking bassline brings it back it back home. more great work from this growing talent!

ground loops ampersand (i) is a release exploring contemporary techno by some of technos best contemporaries. the original fuses old school ideals with modern production techniques to create a floor friendly, groove oriented track that manages to maintain a sense of purpose and emotion. on remix duties are lucy (stroboscopic artefacts) who produces a seminal remix taking on the atmospherics of the original and building upon that to create a space and tension we have all come to know and love of his productions. samuli kemppi (ostgut ton, mote-evolver) who delivers a deep slice of dubby detroit influenced funk, perfect for that back room set and once again ignites the sound of that transatlantic relationship. the final remix comes from advanced human (aka. dj hi-shock), who instead focuses on the energy and emotion of the original and twists it into peak time material. already spun and fully supported by luke slater, james ruskin, donor/truss, damon wild, tommy four seven, audio injection, markus suckut, chris finke, go hiyama or raiz to name a few.

first vinyl record for this new techno label. dark, hypnotic, a modern techno. the original track is signed by a new artist, but with clear ideas: darkcell aka adriano giliberti, he creates a journey of sounds that come from far away, rhythms that never stops, with devastating and anxious atmosphere. the remix of markus suckut (stroboscopic artefacts, figure spc, etc..) is in his style, sounds that go up very slowly, everything seems to come out from under the ground and a series of clap you wake up from hypnosis. in the remix of octave (nachtstrom schallplatten, etc..) sounds are more open and the rhythm is more definite, its hypnotic but his style always goes to the techno dancefloor. the first release: you already understand the high level of techno!

the debut release of swedish artist combo (he is half of s.u.m.o. which is well known as jazzy house artist in the beginning of 2000). probably some people know his excellent edit of robert hood >minus<. the title track of a side is modern beatdown house with the emotional piano loop sound. if you like the release of the revenge or mark e, you will like this song. b1 is an old school house version of the title track and >uptown< on b2 is early new york house sound.
